Jane Bolin was born on April 11, 1908 in New York. Her mom's name was Matilda Ingram Emery, and her dad's name was Gaius C. Bolin. Her mom was British and her dad was African American. They all loved each other very much.

Jane adored her dad! He was a lawyer and she wanted to be just like him. It was her dream to be a lawyer ever since she was a kid. Lawyers deal with the laws and rules of the country.

Sadly, Jane's dreams were crushed. During this time, black people weren't treated fairly. Jane was scared that people wouldn't let her be a lawyer. She was afraid that she would get hurt because some people didn't like the color of her skin.

But, Jane was very smart, and she worked hard. She still wanted to be a lawyer. Jane went to a high school in New York and then she went to a very good college. It was called Wellesley College and it was in Massachusetts.

People tried to tell her that she shouldn't go to law school because of the color of her skin and because she was a girl. But, she didn't listen to them. She graduated from college and went to law school. She was the first African American woman to graduate from Yale Law School.
