Mormon religion was founded by Joseph Smith, a New Englander living in western New York. He began preaching Mormon ideas in 1830.

He moved the Mormons to Illinois in 1839. Sadly, he was killed by people who didn't like Mormons.
Brigham Young, another New Yorker, was elected to take over the Mormons. He knew the Mormons should leave to find religious freedom.


Young decided to move the Mormons to present day Utah to escape the terrible religious persecution.
Brigham led his people to Utah, near the Great Salt Lake.
When they got there, they cried out in despair. "How would we get water in this dry land?" one of the Mormons cried.
