Why do I need food you ask?  Because I need energy!  All living things need energy to survive, and we get our energy from the things we eat.  This system is called the food chain.  Let me take you to the beginning of it all...

It all starts with the sun!

The sun gives energy to a producer, like grass.  The grass uses sunlight and water to grow.

Then a primary consumer, like a gazelle, will get energy from eating the grass.  The gazelle is a herbivore, because it only eats plants.  And then this is when I come in...

FUN FACT!  Only 10% of the energy gets passed from one organism to another.  Most of the energy is lost through metabolic processes, like heat.
