Once upon a time, there was a beautiful young woman named Senorita Carmen who lived in Guanajuato, Mexico. Her hair was as dark as the night. She also had almond shaped eyes along with rosy plump lips. She was the daughter of a nobleman; Sir Pedro.  He was determined to marry his daughter off to a rich and powerful man and not to an ordinary man, so each day he would plan dates for his daughter. Although the men were rich, powerful, and handsome, Carmen declined all of them.

Había una vez una hermosa joven llamada Señorita Carmen que vivía en Guanajuato, México. Tenía el pelo tan oscuro como la noche. Tenía ojos en forma de almendra, los labios rosados y gordos. Era la hija de un noble; Señor Pedro. Estaba determinado a casar a su hija con un hombre rico y poderoso y no con un hombre corriente, así que cada día planeaba citas para su hija. Aunque los hombres eran ricos, poderosos y guapos, Carmen los rechazó a todos.

One day, Carmen begged to go to the Basilica church by herself.

“Can I please go by myself? I’m already 18,” Carmen pegged

Sir Pedro sternly said, “Okay, but make sure to come straight home.” 

Carmen jumped with joy and hugged her father. 

“Yes! Thank you. I promise I’ll be back soon,” she said with a smile.

Un día, Carmen suplico ir a la iglesia Basílica sola.

-¿Puedo ir sola? Ya tengo 18 años- , Carmen suplico

El Señor Pedro le dijo severamente: -De acuerdo, pero asegúrate de volver directamente a casa-

Carmen saltó de alegría y abrazó a su padre.

-¡Sí! Gracias. Te prometo que volveré pronto,-  dijo sonriendo.

When the church ceremony ended, a man came up to Carmen. A mariachi, Carlos, came up to Carmen and gave her a rose. He had bright brown eyes with a beautiful smile. 

Cuando terminó la ceremonia de la iglesia, un hombre se acercó a Carmen. Un mariachi llamado Don Carlos se acercó a Carmen y le dio una rosa. Tenía ojos brillantes de color marrones y una hermosa sonrisa.

He seemed like the type of man that could calm a raging bull with just a smile. He blocked her path and started to sing her a song. Carmen was taken aback since she was never allowed to be near low-status men. Her heart fluttered and her stomach tightened. From then on, Carmen and Carlos met each other secretly at the church and snuck away to have dates.

Parecía el tipo de hombre que podía calmar a un toro enfurecido con sólo una sonrisa. Él le bloqueó el camino a Carmen y empezó a cantarle una canción. Carmen se sorprendió porque nunca se le permitía estar cerca de hombres de baja categoría. Su corazón se agitó y su estómago se atiesó. A partir de entonces, Carmen y Carlos se encontraban en secreto en la iglesia y se escapaban para tener citas.

One day, Sir Pedro went to pick up Carmen from the church but to his surprise, he saw Carmen holding hands with Carlos. Sir Pedro was filled with anger and grabbed Carmen from the wrist. 

Un día, el Señor Pedro fue a recoger a Carmen de la iglesia, para su sorpresa, vio a Carmen y a Carlos tomados de la mano. El Señor Pedro se llenó de rabia y agarró a Carmen de la muñeca.

He shouted “How dare you do this to me! I trusted you, and this is what I get in return?! How dare you have a mariachi as a lover?”

Carmen exclaimed, “But father I love him!”

Don Carlos grabbed hold of Carmen’s

other hand and shouted: “Please Sir Pedro let us marry each other!”

Sir Pedro ignored Carlos’s request and rushed Carmen home.

-¿Cómo te atreves hacerme esto a mí? ¿Confié en ti, y esto es lo que obtengo a cambio? ¿Cómo te atreves a tener un mariachi como un amante? - Senor

-¡Pero padre lo amo!-

Don Carlos cogió la otra mano de Carmen y gritó:

 -¡Por favor, Señor Pedro, déjenos casarnos!-

El Señor Pedro ignoró la petición de Carlos y corrió a casa con Carmen.

From then on, Sir Pedro locked Carmen in her room. He told her that he would marry her off to a rich nobleman if she kept meeting Carlos.

Carmen exclaimed, “You can't keep us apart. We will find a way to be together!"

With that being said, Sir Pedro slammed the door in rage.

A partir de entonces, el Señor Pedro encerró a Carmen en su habitación. Le dijo que la casaría con un noble rico si seguíareuniéndose con Carlos.

Carmen exclamó: -No puedes separarnos, encontraremos una manera de estar juntos!-.

Dicho esto, el Señor Pedro somató la puerta con rabia.

Carlos didn’t know what to do since he was not permitted to talk to Carmen. While passing by her house, he noticed that her bedroom window faced exactly toward the window of the house next door. He saw this as an opportunity to be with Carmen; all he had to do was buy the house next door.

Carlos no sabía qué hacer ya que no se le permitía hablar con Carmen. Al pasar por su casa, él se dio cuenta de que la ventana del dormitorio de Carmen estaba exactamente frente a la ventana de la casa vecina. Vio esto como una oportunidad para estar con Carmen; Solo necesitaba comprar la casa vecina.

He offered to buy the house from the owner but was declined each time. Finally, tired of Carlos’ persistent attitude to buy the house, the owner set an extremely high price hoping to discourage him. However, Carlos would not take no for an answer. He went to the bank and cashed out all of his savings to buy the house. He wasn’t going to let money get in the way of being with Carmen.

Se ofreció a comprar la casa del propietario pero él lo rechazó cada vez. Finalmente cansado de la actitud persistente de Carlos para comprar la casa, el dueño fijó un precio extremadamente alto, con la esperanza de desalentarlo. Sin embargo, Carlos no aceptaría no como una respuesta. Fue al banco y sacó todos sus ahorros para comprar la casa. No iba a dejar que el dinero se interpusiera en el camino de estar con Carmen.

From then on, they spent most of their time on the balcony so they could spend time with each other; however, one fateful day as they were sharing a kiss, Don Pedro came into Carmen’s room unannounced. 

Desde ese momento, pasaron la mayor parte de su tiempo en el balcón para poder pasar tiempo junto; sin embargo, un día, mientras se estaban besando, Don Pedro entró en la habitación de Carmen sin avisar.

He was utterly shocked when he saw Carmen kiss Carlos. He started to yell at Carmen to get away from Sir Pedro.

“I won’t let you marry a mariachi!” He proclaimed.

He pulled out of her room and lockedher in his bedroom.

Estaba totalmente sorprendido cuando vio a Carmen besar a Carlos. Le grito a Carmen que se alejara del Señor Pedro.

-¡No te dejaré casarte con un mariachi!-Proclamó.

Salió de su habitación y la encerró en su dormitorio.

That night Carlos knocked on the window of the bedroom Carmen was in. 

“Come on, let’s run away together", he whispered 

“How? I’m locked in” Carlos handed her a key. 

“Here take it. I stole it from your dad. He’s asleep right now on the porch, go.” Carmen grabbed the key and whispered, “Okay, I’ll meet you outside.”

Esa noche Carlos llamó a Carmen a la ventana del dormitorio en el que estaba.

-Vamos, huyamos juntos.-Susurró

-¿Cómo? Estoy encerrado.- Carlos le entregó una llave.

-Aquí, tómalo. Se la robé a tu papá. Está dormido ahora en el porche, vete.-

Carmen agarró la llave y susurró: -Está bien, te encontraré afuera.-

Carmen snuck out of the room and tiptoed as she went through the porch. There, she saw her dad fast asleep and kissed him on the forehead. She quietly said, “I’m sorry but I will never marry someone just for their money and status. I want to marry someone who is kind and loves me for who I am, just like you loved mom."

She left with tears in her eyes and got onto Carlos’s horse. They planned to go into hiding.

Carmen salió furtivamente de la habitación y caminó de puntillas mientras atravesaba el porche. Allí vio a su papá profundamentedormido y lo besó en la frente.

Ella dijo en voz baja: -Lo siento pero nunca me casaré con alguien sólo por su dinero y su estatus social. Quiero casarmecon alguien que sea amable y me ame por lo que soy, de la manera en que tú amaste a mamá.-

Se fue con lágrimas en los ojos y se metió en el caballo de Carlos. Planeaban ocultarse del resto de la sociedad.
