One night a very eager-to-bond fluorine atom was chilling in the sky looking down upon all of the groups of friends that were hanging out below him.

He was sad because he was looking for one specific atom, one that had an extra electron to give him.
He then saw a hydrogen atom that looked like it may have been carrying an extra electron. The fluorine atom was in disbelief.

The two started bonding, but the hydrogen atom felt as if there was a difference in power and control because the Fluorine atom always had control of his electron.

The hydrogen atom also felt that the fluorine atom was very negative, almost forcing him to become a positive part in their relationship.

So he started to do some research to try to explain this difference. He came across the idea of electronegativity, which is basically the tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair.

The hydrogen atom believed that because his electronegativity was less than the fluorine, that he didn't really want his electron as much as the fluorine did.
This explained why the fluorine atom was so negative, because he stole the hydrogen's electron. This also made the hydrogen somewhat more positive than before due to his electron being taken.
