The Constitutional Convention met to look over the problems that were occurring throughout the United States. Some problems were the weak central government that was under the Articles of Confederation.

The Articles of Confederation was the first constitution of the United States. It was adopted on November 15, 1777 by the Continental Congress. It wasn’t approved until March 1, 1787.

The Articles created a weak confederation, most of the power went to the states instead of the central government, this caused fights to break out between states. The need for a strong central government became very prominent in later years.

Under the Articles of Confederation making and passing, federal laws and doing foreign policy was hard because of some individual states thought that it went against what they believed in.

That is why they created the Constitutional Convention that was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It met between May and September of 1787. The present United States Constitution replaced the Articles of Confederation on March 4, 1789.

The Convention in Philadelphia was held to resolve the issues that arose in the years under the Articles of Confederation. The federal government wanted to make a central government that would be stronger.

To make a stronger government, the convention created a model government, and put it in the Constitution, that was divided into three parts that had checks and balances, to ensure that no part of the government could become too powerful.
