-There were also soldiers that were not Roman citizens
-They joined to fight for 25 years
-After the 25 years was up they were rewarded with Roman citizenship!
-Citizenship was good because it came with lots of privileges

What are Roman Legions?

-Roman legions were groups of 6,000 soldiers (all men)
-The soldiers were well trained, supplied, organized and successful

I'm still better...
-The legions conquered nearly the whole boot of Italy.
-They were the backbone of the Roman empire.

I prefer heels...
-The soldiers in the Roman Legionary were mostly Roman citizens
- They signed up for 20 years
-After the 20 years they would get awarded with land or a large amount of money

OR
Being a citizen gives you:
The right to contribute in government activities and had legal rights.
***FUN FACT- Women were not allowed to fight in the wars and even if they were a citizen they had barley any legal rights!

What was the organization of the Roman Army
(Legions) ?

-Legions were lead by a legate ( who was either a senator or a governor.)
-The aquila, or eagle, was a prominent symbol used in ancient Rome especially as the standard of a Roman Legion.
-Legions were made up of 10 groups of soldiers called cohorts which are an ancient Rome's military unit.
-Cohorts were then divided into groups of men called centuries.
What armor and weapons did they have?
They were provided with good armor and weapons. The armor has pieces of overlapping iron strips that was protective but was flexible enough for the soldiers to move quickly. The helmets had pieces of metal that went over the jaw area and forehead area to protect them from swords.
