The Big Bang
In 1929 Edwin Hubble discovered the universe
is rapidly expanding. The cause of this was
found to be a point in time 14 billion years ago
when a violent reaction caused the creation of
the universe.

Stonehenge (3,100 bc)
A huge formation of stones constructed in
Britain approximately 5,000 years ago. It is
believed to a be some sort of ancient
observatory.

Aristotle (384-322 BC)
Regarded as one of the greatest
philosophers of all time, Aristotle also
studied a great amount of astronomy. He
was one of the first to theorize not only a
spherical Earth, but a spherical universe.

Aristarchus (310-230 bc)
Aristarchus was a Greek philosopher who
believed the then unthinkable theory of
heliocentricity. Which during that time
conflicted with the main theme of a
geocentric universe proposed by religious
principles.

Eratosthenes (284-192 bc)
A Greek Mathematician by nature, he was
also an excellent astronomer. He was able
to successfully deduce the circumference of
the Earth by measuring the angle of
shadows compared to the surface.

Hipparchus (190-120 BC)
This Greek astronomer is often known for
his study of equinoxes, or the alterations of
star positions resulting from intersection by
the Earth’s orbit.

Ptolemy (90-168 AD)
A Greek citizen of Egypt known for his work
in astronomy. He created geocentric
models he claimed were inspired by his
predecessors. His astronomical models
were presented in table which could be
used to determine the locations of celestial
bodies, past or present.

Nicholas Copernicus (1473-1543)
A Polish astronomer who had theorized that
the sun was not the center of the universe,
but was slightly offset. This idea was
developed using a device created by
Ptolemy called the equant point.
