Wade-Davis Bill

The Wade-Davis Bill wanted to base the Reconstruction of the South on the governments power to guarantee a republican government. It also helped the national and congressional powers.

Next came Andrew Johnson, he was elected after Lincoln was assassinated. He made his own idea for Reconstruction. He wanted the south to re-form their governments.

Johnson's idea for restoration was a fast and easy restoration. The seceded states would have to the four following things in order to be put back in the Union.
-take a loyalty oath
-you couldn't receive a pardon if you owned property valued at 20,000 dollars and above, or if you were a high confederate official
-get rid of slavery
-repeal your secession ordinance

Then the black codes were designed, these codes were made to restrict a former slaves life. These codes ensured their time to labor instead of other activity. Some free blacks had to sign a labor contract, anywhere from one year to multiple and risked punishment if they refused

A system that had come to agriculture and became very dominate in the south. Blacks would rent land from white owners and work on it, then give the land owner a portion of the crops.
Freedman's Bureau helped free blacks and poor whites after the war. They provided medical care, housing, schooling, and legal assistance to those who had nothing after the war.
Civil Rights Act of 1866:
"ALL PERSONS BORN IN THE UNITED STATES WERE NOW CITIZENS, WITHOUT REGARD TO RACE, COLOR, OR PREVIOUS CONDITION. "
The 14th Amendment is founded. This amendment address the right for "all persons of the United States to hold equal protection of the laws."
