Earthlodges are dome-shaped homes made of logs and covered with willow branches, grass, and other particles of the Earth. The Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara tribes used Earthlodges.

Garrison Dam is located on the Missouri River. The purpose of the Garrison Dam is to block the flow of water to control downstream flooding. Garrison Dam was built in the 1950s.

The Hidatsa people moved for forests of Minnesota to eastern North Dakota about 500 years ago. They settled near the Mandan people around 400 years ago.

Lake Oahe is located on the Missouri River in southern North Dakota. Lake Oahe was created around the same time Garrison Dam was created. The lake forms the eastern boundary of Standing Rock Sioux Reservation.

Metis people are people who are half Chippewa and half French. Many Metis people settled in Chippewa communities. The Metis people were good bison hunters and fur traders.

The Nakota Sioux divided into two tribes. The Chippewa pushed the Natoka Sioux into North Dakota from Minnesota. The Nakota Sioux settled in South Dakota and southern North Dakota.
