What was the Cold War?
-- Rivalry between the U.S and the Soviet Union
-- After WWII, and the dropping of the atomic bomb, the U.S and Soviet Union argued about communism. The U.S was scared of communism and didn't want it, but the Soviet Union loved communism. This argument led to lots of competition, which resulted in harsh consequences in the end.
Arms Race
Race to make better weapons than another nation
1). U.S and Soviet Union went against each other and tried to have a better nuclear weapon in order to create fear.
2). Hydrogen bomb was made and it was bigger than the atomic bomb.
Containment
-- Keeping something harmful under control
-- The Marshall Plan was the Truman's Administration plan to build Europe again in a way that would stop communism from spreading.
Space Race & US/USSR
-- Race to create technology that will help land on the moon and look at space
-- The competition between the U.S and USSR became stronger because they both wanted to spy on each other through satellite.
Indirect Conflict
-- Proxy wars and events that added tension to The Cold War, but it was not the main cause.
1). U.S & Soviet Union encouraged activities in other countries to boost their ideologies.
2). Conflict was in Korea and Vietnam because these were proxy wars that added tension.
Causes & Effects of Korean War
1). North Korea invaded South Korea (June 25, 1950)
2). Truman ordered air & naval support for South Korea (June 27, 1950)
3). Korea divided into North and South (September 1945)
Causes & Effects of Vietnam War
-- In 1995, the U.S was scared of the domino theory, so they entered the Vietnam War. They didn't want Vietnam to fall to communism because they thought that other countries would too (causing a domino effect).
-- The U.S sent troops to South Vietnam to stop the spread of communism (1965).
-- Vietnam War took millions of lives (1955-1975).
-- Hundreds of thousands of children were left to be orphans (1955-1975).
-- South Vietnam lost to the North and Vietnam turned into a communist country (1975).
