When you think of war you think of soldiers battling with guns and tanks like in World War II. Let's learn about another war where two countries never fought each other directly with guns but with words and power.

This is the story of the Cold War.

Why did all of this start? Well, tensions were already building between the 2 great superpowers after World War II. USA had showed their strength by successfully dropping an atomic bomb but USSR wanted to show their strength by spreading their communist views.

After WWII, Germany was divided into East and West Germany. USA and her friends protected the West, while the East was controlled by the Soviet Union. This tension was seen by other countries and felt in the speech by Winston Churchill about the Iron Curtain.

The Soviets were threatening to spread communism to Greece and Turkey and this influenced President Truman to create the Truman Doctrine which pledged to support other countries in their struggle to resist communism. The Americans were strongly trying to contain communism and the Russians were strongly trying to spread communism.

The Soviets begin to get tough and block all roads into West Berlin. This would cause millions to starve so the Americans responded with the Berlin Airlift and used planes to deliver food and supplies.

USA decided to join together with other countries such as Canada, Britain and France and created NATO to fight communism. The Soviet Union joined with other communist countries and creates the Warsaw Pact. The tension was constantly building.
