Dedicated to the island of Sugarcane

Once upon a time on the island of Sugarcane, there was a curious bird. The bird was a little longtail. Most of the land had homes on it or was covered by trees. "What are those people doing to the land?" she wondered.

As she flew closer, she could see that were farmers and they were growing something. "That's weird. This island had a lot more farmland in the past" she thought to herself. She flew even closer and saw that different farms were growing different fruits. Some farms were growing sugarcane, some bananas, some mangoes, and some even had pineapple.

She had heard about this type of farming from a friend. This is Mediterranean agriculture because they are growing fruit and eating it. She looked and in the middle of the island there was a plantation that grew sugarcane. She noticed there were not very many machines, except for a few tractors here and there.

She swooped over the farmers' heads and heard them say "I wish the government would subsidize us but instead they import all of their produce and focus on tourism. The industry used to depend on us farmers. Stupid tourists." She had seen refrigerated trucks take some of the fruit to various stores and restaurants around the island. Also, she had seen some of the sugarcane and fruit get sent to other Caribbean Islands by boat and plane.
