-MISS CYNTHIA

Today was our field trip to the science museum. Everyone except Miss Cynthia and myself was not excited. But for some reason I felt like this field trip was going to be speical.
Oh my gosh...I forgot to introduce myself! My name is Isabelle and I am in Miss Cynthia's 7th grade science class. Well it is time to load onto the bus. See you at the science museum!

While I was sitting on the bus I was imagining all of the cool stuff we would do at the museum.

We met our tour guide Carl and all I could think about as we were listening to him was what we had just learned in science class: Mitosis and Meiosis.

I remembered what Miss Cynthia had told us...
"Meiosis is cell division where sperm and egg cells are created & mitosis is cell division where cells create new cells. They have different phases called Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase."

Carl took us into a room all about mitosis & meiosis and I was in heavan. I asked Miss Cynthia if I could stay back and look at this room for a while and she said yes!
"Sure you can!"

"Can I stay here for a little while longer?"

"Oooh!" "Ahhhh!" "This is awesome!"
I was in my own world and before I knew it I started daydreaming about what it would be like if I was a part of Mitosis and Meiosis.

MITOSIS IS COOL !
MEIOSIS IS COOL !

I figured since my name was Isabelle and it started with an "I", I would be interphase.
I thought back to what Miss Cynthia had told us about the two phases of interphase. Then I daydreamed myself actually being the cell going through interphase.
INTERPHASE
Cells spend most of their time here
The cell grows & develops **This is the same for mitosis
and meiosis.**
DNA replicates
**There is not a interphase 2.**
Chromosomes duplicate to form
chromatin

In my dayream I was now a cell just chilling through interphase growing & developing, replicating my DNA, and duplicating my chromosomes to form chromatin. Life was good!
Then I imagined my friend Parker being the next phase of mitosis called Prophase. I couldn't wait to tell him about my daydream. He would crack up!

"Hey Isabelle!"
I remembered what Miss Cynthia told us about prophase.
Prophase
Homologous (like) chromosomes pair up (MI/ME)
Nucleus begins to break apart (MI/ME)
Crossing over may occur (ME)
In mitosis, during prophase the chromatin condenses (MI)
"Hey! I'm a cell...and I'm going through prophase."

Then I thought of my best friend in the whole world...Morgan! She loves mitosis and meiosis almost as much as I do.
"Morgan would be perfect for Metaphase. It is her favorite phase after all!"
"Hey guys! My name is Morgan."

Once again, I remembered what Miss Cynthia had told us about Metaphase...
Metaphase
Homologous pairs line up at the metaphase plate for separation. (ME)
Chromosomes also line up individually along the metaphase plate during meiosis II. (ME)
Spindle fibers have captured all chromosomes. (MI)
2 kinetochores of each chromosome should be attached to microtubles of opposite spindle poles. (MI)
