This informational texts aims to teach and get students excited about dinosaurs in any elementary school classroom. It specifically addresses the standard "Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats" (2-LS4-1). This second grade standard will be a preface to learning about how animals have gone extinct over the years and evolved into other, different animals. They will then move on to explore biomes/habitats and the animals that live within them.

Hi, my name is Emily! Welcome to my room or, as I like to call it, my imagination station! This room can take me anywhere I want to go if I imagine hard enough.
I LOVE to read. This is my book shelf. I have all kinds of books. Reading books help me to imagine things more clearly and correctly. My mom recently bought me a book about dinosaurs. I have read it one billion, trillion times.

Today, in my imagination station, I thought we could imagine ourselves back almost 250 million years so that we can visit some... DINOSAURS! But first, I need to change my outfit.

Which should she choose?
I think this outfit will be perfect. Thanks for your help. Dinosaurs lived in the Jurassic period. All of the continents used to be one BIG continent called Pangea. That is why we find dinosaur fossils all over the world. Different dinosaurs lived in different biomes. Some were found in the desert, some in mountains, others in the grassy plains, and even in the sky. Now, I think that it is time that we go imagine ourselves meeting some dinosaurs!

This is Pangea!

We made it to the Jurassic period! We are definitely not in my bedroom anymore.
We have traveled back almost 250 million years to the time that the dinosaurs were alive. Paleontologists, or scientists who study dinosaurs, say that there are 700 different kinds. WOW, that is a lot! They even think there are more to be discovered. I think we should take a closer look at some of my favorites that I read about in my book, but remember, we need to be quiet so they don't spot us.

This dinosaur is called a Stegosaurus!
A stegosaurus was an herbivore, or an animal that eats plants. It has a brain the size of a walnut, so it is safe to say it is not the smartest dino! The stegosaurus is best known for its rounded back and its double row of back plates that end with a a double pair of spikes on its dinosaur’s tail. It's tail is called a thagomizer. Something silly it did was eat rocks to help him digest the plants he ate. My tummy would hurt if I did that. Let's move on and imagine meeting another dinosaur
A brontosaurus was the biggest of all the dinosaurs! It was 75 feet high and could weigh up to 50,000 pounds. Even though it was so big and seems kind of scary, it was an herbivore. Its super long tail made sure that the brontosaurus was able to counter balance its long neck. It must have been hard to have been that tall! I'm glad my neck is much shorter than this dinosaurs. Now, let's head off to the sky to learn about our next dinosaur!

This is a pterodactyl!
This dinosaur is called a pterodactyl. What a funny looking word. My mom told me it is pronounced "ter-o-dac-til". I would have loved to meet one of them! The pterodactyl was not very big, only about 3-6 feet in length. It was a carnivore which means that it ate meat like small fish and other small animals. It had 90 teeth that made hunting easy! I would be able to eat my dinner so fast if I had that many teeth. I'm ready to imagine another dinosaur now. Flying this high is scary!
