This book is to help students learn interesting facts about domestic cats.

Domestic cats are one of the most popular household pets. But how well do you really know your feline friend?

Hi, I'm Oliver and I am a domestic cat! I'm here to share some fun facts about myself.

For instance, I do not have a collarbone. This allows me to fit through many small spaces.

I also have these really long whiskers that grow on the sides of my head. They help me locate objects in the dark and judge the width of a gap to see if I can fit through it.

I have 250 bones in my body and about 10% of them are just in my tail! My tail is very important for maintaining balance.

I have a scratchy tongue lined with papillae, which are tiny, elevated, backwards hooks that help to hold prey in place when I am outside hunting. I also have retractable claws for good grip.

Speaking of hunting, there is something important to remember about my diet. I am an obligate carnivore which means I can eat meat very well, but I have trouble digesting plant matter. About 20% of my diet must be protein.

The only thing I don't like about being a cat is that I can't see directly under my nose.

If you see me strolling through town, you might notice that I walk differently than you. I walk at a "pace" which means that both legs on one side move together.

Sometimes I have to go to the doctors just like you. They make sure I am less then 10 pounds and that my body temperature is at 101.5 degrees.

They even check my teeth! When I was a kitten, I had six baby teeth. Now that I am older, I should have 30 permanent adult teeth.
Let's talk numbers! The average age for a cat is 15 years. However, indoor cats live almost three times longer than outdoor cats. They are sterilized, vaccinated and removed from the stresses, risks, and dangers of the outside world.

Outdoor cats are at increased exposure to fleas, ticks, and other parasites and illnesses. They are likely to get in fights with other animals as well. Good thing I spend most of my time inside!

On average, female cats live one to two years longer than male cats. Mixed breed cats are, in general, hardier and live longer than purebred cats.

I like to sleep a lot! I usually sleep for 12-16 hours a day. I am crepuscular, which means I am most active during the twilight hours of dawn and dusk.

You may have wondered why cats purr. There are several reasons. Most people think we only purr as a sign of pleasure. However, kittens purr to bond with their mother. Purring is also a natural healing mechanism to help strengthen and repair our bones, relieve pain, and heal wounds.

I have three final fun facts to share with you. First, I have really great night vision. I can see six times better than you in dim light!

Second, I have amazing hearing. I am able to hear ultrasound which helps for hunting at night.
