What was the Wailing Wall?
It was a place of pilgrimage and prayer place that was sacred to Jews. It was in the old city of Jerusalem, Israel. The wailing wall is the only remains of the Second Temple of Jerusalem. This wall was, and still is, very significant to many people.
Why is it called the "Wailing Wall"?
It is an Arabic translation from the term el-Mabka, which means "place of weeping". The description is based on the Jewish practice of mourning during the destruction of the Temple, and praying for its rebuilding at the site of the Wailing Wall.
How big was the wall?
The wailing wall is about 1600 feet (50 meters) long, and about 60 feet (20 meters) high. But, the wall extends much deeper into the earth. Visitors wedge small papers, such as prayers and petitions, into the cracks between the stones.
Who built the Wailing Wall?
King Herod built the wall in 20 B.C. He built it as the supporting western wall of the Second Holy Temple. He was also a really good builder with many beautiful sites (such as the wall).
