In 1938 frankin d roosvelt announced that he was going to expand the pilot program.
but at that time there was still segregation.
The pilots were trained in Tuskegee, Alabama. That's how they became the Tuskegee airmen.
The 99th fighter was Benjamin Davis Jr.
Their impressive performance earned them more than 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses, and helped encourage the eventual integration of the U.S. armed forces.
