is for Articles of Confederation
This was the first American Constitution that established a loose friendship between states under a weak Congress. It did pass the Land Ordinance and the Northwest Ordinance, but Congress couldn't tax or maintain trade. It didn't make a Courts or a position for President. It was replaced by the Constitution we have now in 1789.

is for Bank War
It was a "war" between President Andrew Jackson and the supporters of the national bank. Jackson rejected the bank law by saying that the bank built a bad link between the rich people and the government. He took all of the government's money out of the bank and put it in his "pet banks" in the states and caused a horrible economic crisis.

is for Henry Clay

He was known as the Great Compromiser because he solved a lot of problems through compromises. He made the Missouri Compromise and Compromise of 1850 to keep the North and South from fighting over the expansion of slavery. He also came up with the American System which is a plan to unite the country.

NORTH
SOUTH
is for Declaration of Independence

It was the announcement of independence written by Thomas Jefferson on July 4, 1776. It told King George III that the colonists were breaking away from Britain and listed all of the reasons why they were breaking away. It also said what they had done to solve all of the problems they had with Britain and how the King hadn’t done anything about it.
AMERICA: WE ARE NOW FREE FROM YOU GREAT BRITAIN!!!
Declaration of Independence

is for Emancipation Proclamation

It declared that all the slaves in the rebelling states free. But this didn’t include the border states that had slaves but stayed with the Union during the Civil War. So basically, this didn’t actually free any slaves but it did boost the confidence of the North because now their soldiers had something to fight for.

All of the slaves are free!!!
is for Federalist Papers

They were a bunch of essays written by John Jay, Alexander Hamilton, and James Madison. They were trying to convince the states to approve the Constitution so it can replace the weak Articles of Confederation. All three of them wrote it without their name and said what the constitution means. Now they are looked at to know what the meaning of the Constitution is. They argued against the Anti-federalists.

is for Gilded Age

It's the name given to the time period from 1865-1896. It was full of big business and drama. A lot of new stuff made better the way people lived like railroads and the telegram. People like Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, Carnegie, and J.P. Morgan got rich while the poor got even poorer. But those same businessmen did a lot of bad things to get rich but also tried to do some good to balance it.
is for House of Un-American Activities Committee

It was a committee during the 2nd Red Scare that questioned people for doing things that were not American. It was trying to expose the communists in America. It accused a lot of celebrities who were called the Hollywood 10. McCarthy was the name of the person that headed the committee. He used his power of accusing people of being communist for his own good.

is for Indian Removal Act

Andrew Jackson signed this law and ordered to remove all of the Indian tribes east of the Mississippi. It moved these Indian tribes to the Indian Territory west of Arkansas and Missouri. It started the Trail of Tears. The indian tribes included Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole. Some went

peacefully but many resisted and died on the way to Oklahoma.
is for Judicial Review

It is the idea that the Supreme Court gets the last say in what law or action is right based on the Constitution. This was unclear at the beginning because the federal government and the states claimed their right to decide whether a law was

correct. Through the decision of Marbury v. Madison, the court claimed the power to decide the meaning of the Constitution.
is for George Kennan

He wrote the Long Telegram. In it he expressed the idea of containment, which means to stop communism from spreading but not to push it back and remove it. He said it was safe for democracy because communism would keep spreading and remove freedom from the earth because that’s just what it is. This idea was the US’s way of dealing with the Soviet Union and communism.

is for Louisiana Purchase

It was a land purchase made from France (Napoleon) by Thomas Jefferson. It doubled the size of the country overnight for only 3 cents an acre. Thomas Jefferson was unsure about making this deal because he didn’t know if he had the power in

the Constitution to make deals like this as president. But the offer was so good that he made the deal anyway.
is for Monroe
Doctrine

It was a statement by President James Monroe that warned European countries to stay out of Latin America. It told them not to colonize the New World anymore. It was weird because at that time the United States wasn’t powerful enough to back up this claim. They couldn’t enforce this but the Europeans stayed out anyway.

No one allowed in Latin America!!!
is for New Deal

This was Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s plan to get America stable again from the Great Depression. He passed many laws to help the people who were suffering and didn’t have jobs. Through many new programs he made jobs and passed laws to make the people trust the economy again. Some didn’t think he was doing this right because it increased the power the president has and also because the country didn’t have money to make these programs so he had to increase the government’s debt to fund this.

They were letters that John Hay wrote from 1899-1900. In it he told the other powerful countries to respect China and its right to trade with everyone. It established the Open Door policy. That is the idea that the US businesses and customers can get things from China.
