A common ancestor is...well, let me tell you a little story.

Humans weren't always around. They weren't here when earth was created. First, there were monkeys, to be more precise, chimps and apes.

Many years later, they started to change. They weren't like chimps! Their tails got shorter, they didn't have as much hair, so...

Soon after, they got smarter and more complex! They weren't smart, so they now had common sense! Weird, right?

Then, came humans. These people were related to us, because we are all humans, but we have changed. We look different!

Hold up. You're saying that we were once like monkeys and apes?

Yeah! Pretty much!

This same exact concept applied for other animals too. For example, take dogs. We didn't evolve from dogs.
