Crossing the street at any time of day or night requires you to be alert and aware of the cars and traffic that are on the street. Being aware of traffic patterns and watching the drivers in order to make sure they see you are important to keep in mind at any intersection. In order to be safe while crossing the street there are a few guidelines to keep in mind.

When crossing the street, be sure to wear bright colors in order to remain visible to oncoming cars. If it is rainy or dark out, it may be hard for the drivers to see you. Wearing brightly colored clothing or reflective clothing can increase the likelihood that a driver will see you crossing the street.

Always follow the traffic signs and signals. Wait for a green light and then cross the road quickly. Even if there are no cars coming it is always best to wait for a green crossing signal. When crossing the road be sure to walk quickly in the crosswalk. Do not stop for any reason.

Before crossing the street make sure to stay alert and do not use electronic devices or headphones. Using headphones can inhibit your ability to hear oncoming cars. When crossing the street be sure to put your cellphone or other electronic device away in order to minimize distractions and the potential for dropping the device in the street.

If a sidewalk is available always walk on the sidewalk. The side of the road does not offer enough space for cars to safely pass you without leaving their lanes. Sidewalks offer you protection from busy roads.
