Know the Dangers
Using tobacco can be dangerous because it can impact emotional and physical development. It can also lead to long term disease and addiction. These can interfere with school, relationships, and health. Tobacco can also cause decreased breathing function and lung disease, as well as narrowing blood vessels. It also strains the heart and decreases oxygen.

Harmful Effects of Tobacco

Nicotine is highly addictive and poisonous because it contains harmful chemicals.
Smoking can lead to lung cancer, chronic coughing, and wheezing.
Using tobacco also narrows blood vessels, which can cause clots around arteries.
Using tobacco can cause oral effects, like stained teeth and white spots on the cheeks.
Tobacco also prematurely ages the user, giving them wrinkles, facial hair, and acne.
Secondhand Smoke
Secondhand smoke is the smoke that is exhaled from a smoker or given off by burning tobacco.
Secondhand smoke can cause the same effects as if you smoked yourself. Additional effects include asthma and other health issues. Secondhand smoke is worse than direct smoke because it is more widespread. Very little of the harmful chemicals are lost.

Third-hand Smoke
Third-hand smoke is tobacco smoke residue that settles onto objects. It can stick to hair, clothing, and furniture. Non-smoking adults and children are at risk for tobacco related health problems. When they inhale, ingest, or touch surfaces and materials containing third-hand smoke, they are susceptible to these problems. Third-hand smoke can be present long after the smoke has receded.

Policies to Prevent Tobacco Use
Policies that could be used to prevent tobacco use include: forbidding tobacco and alcohol by students, staff, and visitors at schools and events. Provide comprehensive tobacco, alcohol, and drug prevention education to youth. Provide specific training to teachers and parents. Involve parents and families in school efforts to prevent tobacco and substance use. Offer prevention projects and activities for students.
