The unification of Italy

Long ago, in Europe there was a body of people that were in charge of the citizens. They were known as the Congress of Vienna. The Congress of Vienna redrew the map in the way that they saw best fit everyone.

The congress of Vienna split the peninsular of Italy into several states. The Italians were split into three groups and were all under different rules. Despite this, pride was growing among the Italians.

As time passed Italians became more interested in celebrating Italian culture. A very famous artist named Giuseppe Mazzini supported the cause and formed a group. That group supported celebrating culture. They were known as Young Italy.

Many Italians believed that Italy should be unified. So the people initiated rebellions against the rulers. Unfortunately most of the rebellions were unsuccessful.

Despite a lot of unsuccessful rebellions two men were able to rise up and initiate a successful movement. The two men were Camillo di Cavour and Giuseppe Garibaldi.
In 1848 the Italians led rebellions against the Austrian rule . Piedmont strongly believed that Italy should be unified and declared war on Austria. The war lasted for only a year and unfortunately he lost the war.

The only successful rebellion was in Sardini. The rebellion made the leaders of Sardinia accept and allow a new constitution.

Following the success of the rebellion in Sardina, Camillo di Cavour emerged and became the prime minister. As prime minister, he made a lot of changes to help develop the Kingdom of Sardinia.
