This is Giuseppe Mazzini. A man whose ideas helped bring Italy to the country we know today. He wanted to throw the Austrian government out of Italy.
Camillo di Cavour was another important man. He created a newspaper, called Il Risorgimento, that helped spread the idea of bring Italy together and saying bye-bye to Austria.

Giuseppe Garibaldi followed the ideas of Mazzini. Since he had used violence in his past, he used that to help him and everyone else who had the same ideas as him. His group, who used the same methods as him were called the Red Shirts! They all wanted to help gain back control over Italy.

Victor Emmanuel became the king over what is now called Italy! He held elections to decide if everyone living in Italy wanted to be brought together. And they all said yes! He helped bring all of the pieces together to create Italy.
Although Italy was now one big happy country they faced many problems.
The main city, Rome, caused a lot of problems because people did not want to be ruled by them. The church did not think Italy was a real country and no longer allowed people of the Church to vote!
People had no money, and started hurting each other. Many people lost their jobs and had to continue giving more money to the government, in the form of taxes!
However, the government did try to help. They wanted jobs to be safer, and allow people to work less as well as help not allow kids to work. They tried to make Italy as great of a country as possible!
