It was the winter of 1776, and many American soldiers were suffering. They needed food, shelter, and warmth. They had been losing their past battles against the British, and were running out of supplies.

Many soldiers were losing hope. They didn't believe that they would win the war, so they started to give up.

I don't see the point in fighting anymore. I'm freezing, and we don't have any supplies left for fighting.

I don't get it either. We've been working so hard, but it seems like we've made no progress.
