All her life, Tutu knew that she wanted to be a magician. she studied card tricks, practiced linking rings, and even managed to pull a rabbit out of her head. Tutu worked hard, and one day, a master magician gave her a magic wand that made objects disappear and reappear.

Tutu wanted to take her act on the road with Squibble's Circus, but there was only one problem.She needed math to make her wand work. Making things disappear was easy, but Tutu had trouble making them reappear. In order for her things to return, she had to wiggle her wand and call out the number that had disappeared. Tutu often got out her wand to practice.

One afternoon, Tutu practiced with her pet toads. '' 10 toads here to play, abracadabra, take some away!'' she said. Crack! A flash of light erupted from her wand. When the smoke cleared, there were 6 toads left over. '' hmm. 10 minus what equals 6? ''

Tutu was about to give up when her friend Penelope, a math whiz, came over. '' you can make it an addition problem instead.'' Penelope said. ''6 plus what makes 10?'' ''ohhhhh'' Tutu said,nodding. ''I know that 6 plus 4 makes 10!'' She gave her wand a flick and shouted out the number of missing toads, ''Four!'' the toads reappeared and hopped back to the rest of the group.

''now, let's do a number that's trickier than 10.'' Penelope suggested. She set out 17 colorful scarves. Tutu wiggled her wand, and murmured, '' 17 scarves, set out here. Shazoom, shazam, make some disappear.'' the scarves exploded like fireworks, and 8 remained.
