Why this Book is Banned
A Separate Peace, a novel written in 1959, has been considered a controversial text. It is mostly controversial towards young readers. There have been several complaints about the book and this is one of the reasons they had to ban this book. Some complaints include vulgar language, negative attitudes expressed by teenagers, and the homosexual overtones between the main characters, Gene and Finny. This book is not appropriate for young readers but it’s not a horribly inappropriate book. (enotes.com)
- Why this Book should be Read
It is a very great coming- of- age tale. It is also known as an undisputed classic. It teaches how to be responsible for your own actions. By the end of the novel you are taught how to accept yourself as a separate person. It is a deep, moving experience for the reader. (enotes.com)
How the Book Differs from the Movie
The first noted difference between the movie and the novel happens during the first important scene when Gene is revisiting the Devon. In the book it was told in first-person while in the movie it is told by a third-person narrator. The books version of the first-person view made more sense to the story plot as it went on. The first-person view took you more in depth into what Gene was thinking. As to the third-person view which in my opinion made the scene feel less important than it is. (enotes.com)
Summary of the Story’s Plot
Set at a boys’ boarding school in New England during the early years of World War 2. Gene is a lonely, introverted intellectual. Phineas is a handsome, taunting, daredevil athlete. What happens between the two friends one summer, like the war itself, banishes the innocence of these boys and their world. (enotes.com)
