So just what organs make up the digestive system? The digestive system includes the...
-Esophagus
-Liver
-Stomach
-Colon
-Small intestines
-Large intestines
-Appendix
-Rectum
-Anus
The digestive system is responsible for breaking down the food and turning it into nutrients, which are then used throughout the body.
The mouth is the thing that gets everything moving. Your mouth includes:
-Teeth
-Tongue
-Saliva
Digestion starts by creating saliva that forms in your mouth. Saliva breaks down the food in your mouth. The teeth will help chew up your food and the tongue helps move the food toward your esophagus.
The esophagus is a muscle-lined tube that contracts to move food or boluses toward the stomach. It only takes about 2 to 3 seconds for food to travel down your esophagus.
