     Once upon a time, I was a small 

green caterpillar living in this lush green 

backyard at my grandma's house. No 

one really ever saw me or knew that I 

existed. But that was all about to 

change.

     I didn't have many friends as no 

one ever noticed me. I blended into the 

green grass, plants, and leaves. I 

became tired of being lonely and 

decided to crawl up the tree and think 

about what made me different from 

others.

     As I clung to the branch of the tree, 

It began to get dark. The night air was 

cold and frightening. I began to ponder 

as to how I would stay safe and warm.

Along came Lucy the Ladybug. She 

asked what I was doing up here all by 

myself. I explained how alone I was 

feeling and that I had no friends. 

     Lucy said she had seen other 

caterpillars like me in the tree feeling 

the same way. She offered to help and 

suggested I hang upside down and wrap 

myself in fine silk thread and rest. I 

began to spin the thread around me to 

stay safe and warm.

      I didn't realize how much energy it 

took to wrap myself in the cocoon. I was 

exhausted and slept, and slept, and 

slept for a very long time.
