Assimilation happens when a less dominant group of people starts to copy some of the things the dominant group does.
-Assimilation is an effect of integration, when groups are placed together.
-There is individual and group assimilation.
-Assimilation occurred in America after the Civil Rights Act.


The white and African American cultures assimilated after the Civil Rights Act.
is for Beatnik
A beatnik is a young person apart of the beat generation (1950's).
-The beatnik generation was a group of authors.
-Beatniks changed the American culture in a big way.
-Beatniks did not support big parts of American culture like drugs and exploration.

Jack Kerouac was one of the most famous beatniks, and he wrote On the Road (1957).

is for Criminology

Criminology is the study of crime and why criminals do bad things.
-People are punished so others know what will happen if they do the same crime.
-Aristotle first thought of punishment.
-In Europe, crime is learned under law and in America, it is learned under sociology.

Criminology tells us things like how 33% of arrested criminals are left handed.
is for Delinquent


A delinquent is a young person who breaks the law.
-Delinquents are usually sent to a jail with other young people, juvenile detention.
-Children who are 12-17 can be delinquents.
-Usually smaller crimes are punishable by juvenile detention.
A delinquent can go to jail for breaking laws like stealing and violence.
is for Ethnocentrism

Ethnocentrism is when a person decides how they feel about another country based on the way they feel about their own.
-Usually it leads people to believe their country is better than others.
-If you believe everyone should only speak your language, you are ethnocentric.
-Countries with very old traditions are usually ethnocentric, they believe there is no other way to do things.
My grandmother’s ethnocentrism leads her to believe her religion is the only real religion.

is for Folklore

Folklore is the traditions, stories, and ways of life shared by a community.
-Verbal folklore passes down things like songs and stories.
-Material folklore consists of art or decoration, such as a Christmas tree.
-Childlore is apart of it, which passes down nursery rhymes and games.
Old McDonald Has a Farm is an example of a nursery rhyme passed down through childlore.

is for Groupthink

Groupthink is working together as a group that does not give each person a responsibility.
-People are usually not creative in groupthink sessions.
-The main goal is to get the task finished.
-Supporters of groupthink believe it works faster at completing projects.
When Sylvia wanted to throw her creative ideas into the mix, she was quickly kicked out of the groupthink meeting because only the end result was important.

is for Hispanic

Hispanic is the name for the people and things from Spanish-speaking countries.
-Anyone from Spain, Latin America, Mexico, Cuba, as well as Central and Southern America is Hispanic.
-States like California and Texas are home to the majority of the American hispanic population.
-Hispanics are the fastest growing ethnic group in America.
His brown eyes were shadowed, his Hispanic features the color of caramel.

is for introspection

Introspection is when you think about the things you are doing and how you react.
-Another word for introspection is self-reflection.
-Introspection was first supported by Plato.
-Introspection is a very important part of some religions.

Perhaps if you indulged in a little introspection, you would stop repeating the same bad habits.
is for Jack Kerouac

Jack Kerouac was an American author during the 1950's.
-He wrote about sociology and supported the beatnik movement.
-His most famous book is titled On the Road.
-He died in 1969 at the age of 47.
Kerouac changed his name from Jean-Louis Lebris de Kérouac to Jack Kerouac when he started writing,.

is for Kindred

Kindred is someone's family and relationships.
-Kindred can also mean when two people get along very well.
-Most religions and families are rooted and driven by their kin.
-The word is used often in America to say that someone is related to you or someone else.
They had kindred spirits.

is for Labeling Theory

The labeling theory is how someone acts based on how others view them or label them.
-The theory is often used on criminals.
-Law enforcement uses it to show the criminals they are in the wrong.
-The labeling theory interprets the relationship between criminals and noncriminals.
Labeling theory can be used to explain Alex's behavior.

is for Monogamy

Monogamy is being married to one person at a time.
-Most common way of marriage.
-Plural marriage is illegal in the United States, leaving monogamy as the only legal form of marriage.
-Some religions have strict rules about monogamy and polygamy.
My parents are in a monogamist marriage.

is for Norm

A norm is a behavior that usually happens, one a group of people are used to.
-A person's norms says a lot about the person.
-Norms are usually picked up by the people around you.
-There are a million different cultural norms in so many different countries and regions.
Smaller families have become the norm.

is for Out Group

The out-group is a group of outcasts in a social issue group who feel like they belong together based on their differences from the in-group.
-They start out as apart of the main group or the in group.
-The out-group then decides they do not like the main perception.
-Thus creating the out-group, the group of misfits!
The out-group finally spoke out about how they feel.

is for Poverty Line

The poverty line is the level of income below a certain amount when people are poor or in poverty.
-The central African republic has highest rate of poverty.
-The most poverished city in America is Blackwater, Arizona.
-Over half the world lives on $2.50 or less each day.
Over 85 percent of students in the Los Angeles Unified School District live near or below the poverty line, and only 80 percent of the district's students graduate from high school.
