Sam Houston was born on March 2nd,1793 near Lexington Virginia.

His dad died when he was young and was a revolutionary war veteran. This grew his relationship with the neighboring Cherokee Indians.

Houston joined the military during the war of 1812. Because of this he was known to many including Andrew Jackson.

Houston Served 2 terms in congress. Houston got married in 1829 to Eliza Allen. Sam was known as a drinker and because of this he got divorced later on in the year and moved to Arkansas.

In Arkansas, he married a Cherokee women Tiana Rodgers in 1830.

Finally, Houston got married for the 3rd time to Margeret Lea and had 8 kids.

Houston then moved to Texas and became am important voice in pushing for independence.

Texas is now fighting for independence from Mexico. On April 21,1836 Santa Anna split his groups and Sam Houston saw this as his chance. He ordered attack at San Jacinto. Texas won and declared independence.

In 1836 Sam Houston was elected the first president of Texas. He named the capital of Texas Houston and it is near Hunstville. Sam was re-elected president in 1841. This was after Mirabeau Lamar became the 2nd president.

Texas joined the United States in 1845. Houston served as a US Senate from 1846-1860. Sam's goal was to become President but because of his thoughts on slavery put him in a problem with some of the states. During the Civil War Houston was elected governor of Texas in 1859. Sam Houston then retired from politics in and died at his house in Huntville Texas on July 26,1863.
