After the civil war the south was very torn apart land demolished homes and family's broken apart. Many believed that the south deserved to be punished for what they did but Lincoln believed the exact opposite witch brings us to the beginning of reconstruction.

Lincoln's Plan

Lincoln believed that the approach to bringing the nation back together should be a peaceful one. Lincoln's plan was a 3-part plan

1.The U.S would respect property

2. Full pardon and citizenship to those willing to swear allegiance

3.States could form governments and be readmitted when 10% of votes swore the oath states would have to ABOLISH SLAVERY

This was very lenient being that did not win the hearts of many union people

Many didn't like that they weren't punished but he did it because he realized that it was not just union solders that lost everything.His main plan was to keep the union together but the bad part to this plan was that the southerners got off easy so many of them may have thought they could do whatever they want. Being that congress would not have it, so they created the Wade-Davis bill. Congress made this to show the south that it wouldn't be that easy for things to go back to normal.

WADE DAVIS BILL

Created by The Radical republicans of congress and their leader Bengimen Wade,this was their own plan, a different idea for reconstruction their plan was. To make everyone Abolish slavery, EXtend all rights to former slaves . Last to punish the south.Congress believed that 50% of voters should sign a oath before a state could be readmitted.The point of this plan was to destroy the power of all slave holders.

Many loved this plan, unfourtanatley Lincoln pocket vetoed it.They also still refused to seat delegates from states reorganized under Lincolns plan even though their plan was vetoed.Sadly Lincoln was murdered so his plan was gone and the Wade Davis bill also. It was now in the hands of our new president.

ANDREW JOHNSON/Restoration

After Licoln was murdered president Johnson became president being one of the mos racist presidents of all time.He didn't like slave holders or Blacks. He changed the restoration plan, it granted pardons to leading confederates and all states had to do to become part of the country was to repeal succession and ratify the 15th amendment .This was the best thing for all southerners it turned everything back to the way it was.

With Johnson as president were better off living down here

President Johnson was so lenient to confederates because he believed that african americans we inferior to whites and didn't want them gaining power so he made laws to keep them inferior. Southern states put in place black codes and sharecropping. Sharecropping wasn't called slavery but was slavery it was a system to to keep blacks on the farm and they would be in dept to the whites. Many called it slavery with a paycheck. Congress was outraged because ex-confederate leaders were getting reelected and the north lost most of their political power.Most southerners were also democrats.

Congress made the Freedmans Bearu to respond to Johnson and the civil rights act of 1866 . The Bearu was something that provided everything to help African American's to get on their feet.The CRA or 1866 gave citizenship and prevented states from passing black codes. Johnson didn't like it so he vetoed it claiming it was not constitutional but since congress had most power they override Johnsons veto. They created the 14th Amendement because Johnson said civil rights act was unconstitutional so they made it constitutional it provided basis for the CRA of 1866. It conferred civil rights to freedman and disqualified confederate leaders from office

RECONSTRUCTION ACT OF 1867

In the 1866 election the republicans won by so much giving them the power to override Johnson.In the RAO 1867 thy divided the south into 5 military districts , they took away the rights to vote for confederates . States would have to pass the 13 and 14th amendment to get back to union. Johnson veto's but congress overrides.
