The Empire of Mali is located in Western Africa. It grew up along the Niger River and eventually spread across 1,200 miles from the city of Gao to the Atlantic Ocean. It's northern border is just south of the Sahara Desert.

The land in Mali is very dry. The land was used for salt mines and growing millet, rice, and corn. The land has always been this fertile.

Mali has a hot desert climate with long, extremely hot summers and scarce rainfall. The climate has been the same for hundreds of years. Now Mali has some air pollution problems.

The soils outside the Niger valley in Mali are poor. In the south, soils are shallow and form a hard, red crust because of intense evaporation.

Low rainfall means there is little to no surface water in the northern part of Mali. So the Niger River is where its hydrology comes from.

People marry outside their ethnic group and speak languages that differ from those of their ancestors without changing their cultural affiliation. There are three main religions: Sunni Islam, Christianity, and traditional African religion.

As of 2017, Mali has a population of 18.54 million. Compared to 1950 when the population was 4 million.

The architecture of Mali is a distinct subset of Sudano-Sahelian architecture indigenous to West Africa. It comprises adobe buildings such as The Great Mosque of Djenne or the University of Timbuktu. It can be found all over the Sahel region of Africa.

Following the withdrawal of Senegal from the federation in August 1960, the former Sudanese Republic became the Republic of Mali on September 22, 1960 with Modibo Keïta as president. The current president is Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta.
