A gene is a small part of your DNA that controls your traits. Your traits are what make you, you.

A chromosome is what holds your genes, they are tiny things that your DNA can make. Sometimes these tiny things can't always do their job.

Have you ever done something wrong or messed up on something? I'm sure you have. Well, your DNA can mess up too. When this happens your genes and chromosomes can get messed up too. They can change to give you different traits or they can make you get certain disorders or sicknesses.

One type of disorder that can be caused by a mistake, or mess up with your chromosomes is called Down Syndrome. Down Syndrome is caused by having an extra one of those little things made by your DNA, a chromosome. Babies are born with Down Syndrome and are usually diagnosed or told that they have it before they're even born.

Down Syndrome causes kids to learn slower than others it can also effect their physical abilities or appearances. There is no cure for Down Syndrome but there are many things that can be done to help kids with it. They can go to therapists, special people that can help you, or get certain surgeries and tests done.

Kids with Down Syndrome are just like everyone else. They might learn slower and maybe even look a little different from you, but they just want to be accepted like all of us do.
