In 1962, Jackie was the first African American to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

He played in the Negro Baseball League, an all black league, on the Kansas City Monarchs before being recruited to the minor leagues.

Jackie and his wife, Rachel, were very active in the Civil Rights Movement.

Jackie Robinson was traded to the New York Giants in December of 1956, but he never played a game with them because he retired in January of 1957.

Many players on opposing teams threatened to not play against the Dodgers and some of his own teammates threatened to sit out.

On the 50th Anniversary of Jackie breaking the color barrier, the United States Post Office honored him by making a postage stamp with his picture on it.
