a.) Leader and Beginnings
-The beginning of Judaism was at Palestine, at the end of the Mediterranean
Sea.
-It started with what Jews, people who believed in Judaism, call the bible, the
Torah.
-The Torah stated that Abraham was God's chosen "father" of the Hebrew
people.
-The main leader was God.
-Under God was Abraham.
time line
1800 BC - Abraham and his family made their way to Canaan
1650 BC - Abraham's descendants moved to Egypt
1300 BC to 1200 BC - Hebrews fled Egypt, called the Exodus
1020 BC - Hebrews unite under Saul, David and Solomon
962 BC - David was succeeded by his son Solomon
922 BC - Kingdom divided in two
725 BC - Assyrians began a relentless siege of Samaria
722 BC - Kingdom fell to the Assyrians' assault
586 BC - City fell
445 BC - Walls of Jerusalem


b.) Holy Writings and Guidelines
-The bible, or the Torah, was the holy writing for Jews.
-The Jews had guidelines called the Ten
Commandments, which was like "eye for an eye, and
tooth for a tooth."
-But the Torah spoke of God's mercy if you break a
commandment.
-Prophets taught that Jews needed to stay true to their
covenant, or mutual promise, with God.
-The goal was a moral life and to worship God as often
as possible, and also to live justly with one another.


c.) Beliefs/Influences of Beliefs
-In the Judaism religion, followers only worshiped
one God, and He was named Yahweh.
-They believed in the Torah, and everything the
Torah said.
-This religion influenced Canaan when Palestine
made cultural crossroads with Asia, Africa. It was
bordered by Assyria, Babylonia, and Egypt.







a.) Leader and Beginnings
-Jesus was God's son.
-God was the main leader.
-Rome took control of Jewish kingdom.
-God promised to send a savior to restore the kingdom of
Jews.

Around 6 BC - Jesus was born
29 AD - Jesus visited Jerusalem and was greeted as a king
66 AD - Jews rebelled against Rome
132 AD - Jews attempted to break free of Romans
312 AD - Constantine fought rivals for leadership of Rome
313 AD - End of persecution of Christians
325 AD - Constantine continued to solidify further
teachings of Christianity


b.) Holy Writings and Guidelines
-Christians read the Bible.
-The bible had guidelines and stories about the
past and how to live.
-Christians also had the 10 Commandments, which
were straight up rules that you shouldn't break.
-The goal was to live a holy life, with morals and
worshiping God and spread word of Him


c.) Beliefs/Influence of Beliefs
-Christians only believed in one God.
-Under God, there was Jesus.
-Everything the bible says is true and you should
live the life it speaks of.
-Roman power spread to Judea. At first, Jewish
kingdom was independent, but Rome soon took
control. According to the bible, God would send a
savior to renew the Jewish kingdom.
-If you followed the bible, then you might live
eternal life in heaven.

-Brahman was the main leader.
-Hinduism developed slowly over time.
-Hinduism cannot be traced back.

Around 750 BC - Hindu teachers tried to interpret and
explain the hidden meaning of Vedic hymns
-Teachers distinguish the difference between soul of
living beings and Brahman
-Over time, Hinduism goes through many changes.
527 BC - Mahavira, founder of Jainism died
-Siddhartha went seeking enlightenment


b.) Holy Writings and Guidelines
-There are four Vedas, the Rig Veda, Sama
Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda. The
Vedas are the primary texts of Hinduism.
-Hindus were expected to live a life of morality
and correct actions.
-Hindus had a proper way to do everything.
-Attempt to reach moksha, a perfect state of
understanding.


c.) Beliefs/Influence of Beliefs
-Hindus believed they need to live lives of
morality.
-They worshiped Brahman
-Hinduism is a collection of beliefs that slowly
came together over a long period of time.
-Hinduism can be traced back to ancient times.
-Aryans and non-Aryans blended and their
ideas mixed together.







a.) Leader and Beginnings
-Buddhists believed in Buddha, who was their main
leader.
-First Buddhist leader was Ashoka.
-First 5 disciples who heard the first sermon were
admitted to the sangha.
time line
-A prophet indicated that a child would become a world
ruler, but if he left home, he'd become a religious
leader.
-Siddhartha left home and realized he was meant to
become a religious leader.
-After becoming enlightened, Siddhartha became
known as Buddha.


b.) Holy Writings and Guidelines
-Buddhists read the Tipitaka, one of the
earliest kinds of writings.
-Sutra is also a type of holy writing.
-Buddhists were to live with morality.
-Also, they are to try to achieve nirvana, or
release from selfishness and pain.
-They have to commit to practice, reflect on
motivation, study Buddhist teachings
