In the African safari there were three friends.
Nicole the giraffe, Renee the gazelle, and Melissa
the lion. They had all been best friends for as
long as they could remember.
It had always just been Nicole, Renee and
Melissa. They had fun hanging out together doing
many things. Their favorites were swimming in
the lake and running around the African plains.

Then one day, Nicole suggested they make
some more friends. "It gets lonely with just us
sometimes, don't you think? New friends would
be fun!" The others shook their heads. "No, we
like it just us," they protested.
Nicole got upset. She didn't know why her
friends were acting like that "Oh well," she said
"they can go be lonely by themselves." Later
that night, Nicole thought of a plan to make
more friends. She just hoped her old friends
would take her lead.

The next day, Melissa and Renee couldn't find
Nicole. They looked and looked and looked and
they still didn't find her! They began to worry.
"Maybe we drove her away?" Renee suggested.
Melissa began to get angry, "That's crazy, she's
our friend, she wouldn't just leave like that!"
But as the day went on, and they still couldn't
find her, it began to seem less crazy.

As they ran towards her, they noticed she was
with someone else! They had never seem this
giraffe before, and got very curious. Nicole saw her
friends, and went to greet them, and introduce
them to her new friend. "This is my new friend
Niall. He's a giraffe just like me!" They didn't like
the look of this.

Over the next few days, Niall begun hanging out with
them more and more. They went from being three best
friends, to four. And when four people become best
friends, they split into groups of two. "I wish we had
other animals like us" said Renee. Melissa quickly
snapped back "I don't. I liked it when it was just us three
and we were all different."

Melissa decided to come home early one day. She was
sad her best friends were splitting apart. Luckily, she
knew Renee would always be there, or so she
thought.
The next day when Melissa went to hang out with
Renee and Nicole, she found they were both
missing! "Oh great." Melissa sighed, and began her
search.

After many many hours
of searching, she finally
found her friends, plus
Niall. Not only was he
there, but a new
gazelle was with them!
"You have got to be
kidding!" yelled
Melissa. After talking
with her friends, she
found out his name
was Ken. Melissa
realized, she was a
very lonely lion.

She saw how happy both of her friends were
with animals that were the same as them. If only
she could be friends with another lion. Melissa
was up all night thinking of possible ways to
befriend a fellow lion. After a long time of
thinking, she realized she would never find
someone like her. She started to cry.
