There's a big volcano in Hawaii. And it is starting to erupt. There are not any forest around because, forest only grow when they have soil and there is no soil around the volcano.

Primary succession forms new areas from scratch and has no soil there because they could not produce their own soil. The pioneer species begin to break down the rocks into small pieces and start to make soil.

After the soil starts to form, there were more plants that used the soil and started to grow. After many years, there were tiny insects that lived and move around in the soil, because now there is soil for plants and insects to live in.

A few days later, the soil grew even more which made, more bigger plants, like grasses and flowers. The insects living around the soil, now have plants to eat and be able to survive.
