Tom was a slave who was owned by the
Shelby family. Tom lived with his a woman
named Eliza and a boy named Harry. Unlike
most slaves, Tom was able to read and write.
The Shelby son, Christopher, got along well
with Tom and even called him "Uncle Tom".
Compared to many like him, Tom had a pretty
good life with the Shelby family. However,
things would soon get worse for Tom and the
other slaves.

One day, a man came to the Shelby family's
house. He said Mr. Shelby had a debt to settle,
and that the debt would be settled if he sold
Tom. Mr. Shelby had little choice but to do as
the man suggested, so he reluctantly put Tom,
Eliza and Harry up for sale. Some of the other
slaves suggested Tom attempt to escape, but
Tom said it'd be better for everyone if he did
as he was told. However, Eliza and Harry
escaped the plantation and went to Ohio.
Christopher Shelby promised Tom that
someday, he'd buy Tom back.

Tom was put on a steamboat that was taking
him to where he would be sold. While he is on
the ship, a song he is singing catches the
attention of a little girl. They talk for a time,
and the girl gets increasingly closer to the
edge of the boat. Tom warns her to back away,
but he's too late. The girl falls off the boat and
into the water and begins to cry for help
desperately. Tom breaks his shackles and
jumps into the water to save the girl. Tom
brings her back onto the boat, saving her life.
All the while, the girl's father is watching the
event.

The girl's father hastily buys Tom for $1,300.
Now belonging to the St. Clare family, Tom
travels to their house to begin his new life. The
girl, Eva, is very nice to Tom, and so is her
father, Augustine. However, Eva's mother isn't
so nice to the family's slaves. Eva soon
develops tuberculosis and passes. Before this,
Eva made her father promise to set Tom free.
Wanting to honor his promise to his late
daughter, Augustine tells Tom he is a free
man. However, Augustine is killed by an
unknown assailant.

After Tom tells her of Augustine's promise,
Eva's mother says that Augustine would never
say such a thing, and sells Tom at a slave
auction. Tom's new master is a man named
Simon Legree. Simon Legree is very mean and
violent to his slaves. When Tom is in Mr.
Legree's possession, another slave isn't
working to Mr. Legree's standards, so Mr.
Legree orders Tom to beat the woman. Tom
refuses. Mr. Legree says he will have Tom
beaten until he "breaks" and agrees to beat
the woman. Despite being beaten mercilessly,
Tom does not give in.
