By 1919, people were tired of war. They had been fighting for over 4 years and it didn't seem like anyone was winning.

It had been a TOTAL WAR. Sixteen million people had died and thousands of acres of land was destroyed. No one was getting anywhere. Most soldiers didn't even know why they were fighting anymore!

Nope. Not a clue.

Finally, Germany surrendered to the Allies and was forced to sign a peace agreement called the Treaty of Versailles.

WWI was ALL Germany's fault!

Germany is not allowed to have a strong military!

Germany must lose all of it's colonies.

Germany must pay back all the money it cost to fight the war!

Germany can't have a military because they will start another war!

Germany is responsible for all of this mess!

We want to make sure there is peace in the world!

France, UK, and the USA wanted to to make sure there was peace. They thought the best way to do this was to be very harsh on Germany.

The German people did not agree. They saw things differently. They had other thoughts.

It's so not fair.

For starters, the German people did not like the Guilt Clause. They did not think it was fair at all! After all, they had not started the war. They were just helping their ally, Austria-Hungary!
