Once upon a time, in a small village near a river in Japan there lived an old man and his wife. They have no children. Every day the man fishes in the river and his wife collected firewood.
One day, when the old woman was washing, a large peach appeared downstream. He took it with difficulty. The fruit was very big and heavy, then he took it home.
At home, they took a knife and peaches split in two. However, there was the sound of a baby crying and a sweet baby came out.
At first the couple was shocked, then very happy because they had been blessed with a child. They called him Momotaro and raised him with loving attention.
Momotaro grows into a strong and kind child.
One day Momotaro heard about the ogre in Onigashima (Ogre Island) who spread fear among his people. He begged the old man and woman to allow him to go to Onigashima to drive away the giants.
They prepared some millet dumplings for Momotaro to eat on his journey and drove him.
Momotaro departs with high spirits.
