The Science Behind the Madness

In the sky far above, there was a molecule happily floating among the clouds. She was made up of three Oxygen atoms and went by the name Ozone Joan.

Joan was a very busy molecule. She had a very important job. She protected all of the living things down on the good land from the harsh rays of the evil sun.

Joan had other friends that helped her. They were named O2 and were made up of just two oxygen atoms.
One day, the evil sun came to attack, and it was time for Joan and her friends to shine!
O3+Sun radiation=O+O

The sun was harsh and broke up the molecules with
an intense radiation, but no fear! The oxygen molecules fought back with a burst of their own energy, reflecting the sun's nasty rays away from the Earth.

O3+Sun radiation= O2+O

The sun ran away in a hurry, terrified of the counter attack. But, now, lonely single atoms of oxygen floated around looking for friends. Eventually, they discovered other surviving O2 molecules that looked a lot like Joan and eagerly attached to them.

O+O2=O3+heat

Now, many ozone molecules were created to accompany Ozone Joan that could help her save the Earth. The next time the evil sun comes, the molecules will be ready, and they will once again protect the wonderful Earth!

Tips for Protecting your Ozone Layer:
- Ride your bike or take the bus to school!
- Eat healthier!
- Buy items from your local stores!
