Once upon a time in a far away village, there lived a little girl named Pippa. Pippa lived with her mother and her older sister Peyton.

Pippa was a picky eater. She fussed and fussed when it was time to eat.

Every morning Pippa and her sister would get dressed and then come down for breakfast. Their mother would put breakfast on the table, but every morning Pippa would complain about her food. "I am not eating my egg, you cut it all wrong", She whined.

After the girls went out to play, they returned home for lunch. When their mother served lunch, Pippa shouted, "I don't want to eat my orange, you've cut it all wrong !"

Later in the afternoon, the girls returned from a friend's house for an afternoon snack. Pippa's mother had just cut some watermelon for the girls to enjoy. Pippa looked at the watermelon and cried, " oh no! I won't eat that for my snack. You've cut it all wrong again!"

That evening as the family was preparing for dinner. Pippa's mother spoke to Pippa about her picky eating. "Pippa, if you wish for your food to be cut a certain way, you must express this to me before I cut your food". Pippa told her mother and sister that she didn't know how to express how to cut her food. Pippa's sister and mother explained to Pippa all about fractions.

"Fractions are a part of a whole", her mother explained.

"If you wish for your food to be cut into two pieces, that would mean mom cuts your food in half", her sister said. " If you would like your food to be cut in three pieces, that means your food is cut into thirds", her mother told her. "If you wish to have four pieces, then..
