Educational Requirements
A Civil Engineer needs to have a bachelors degree in Civil Engineering and typically, a graduate degree. Also, a license, or a PE,certification is needed for a promotion to senior positions. Engineers must start and finish a four-year collage degree, apprentice under a Professinal Engineer for at the least four years, pass two competency exams and earn a license from the state licensure board.
Benefits
Civil Engineers create the world around us. Many times a monument is erected to show they were around and can be admired by others (Hoover Dam, The Great Wall of China, sewage systems,etc..). Civil engineers get to use the coolest tools including the newest computers, distance meters, and traffic counters.
Challenges
There are plenty of challenges in civil engineering; unfortunately, women get the brunt of that. Did you know that men with less then three years of experience have an average salary of $70,533? However, women with the same experience have an average salary of $68,237. Also, men with ten years of experience earn a salary of $111,877, while women make only $99,733. According to researchers the average percentage of women in civil engineering a mere 14%. One woman who was working was told by the men in their office that they, "didn't like taking girls for work."
