Thank you for always supporting my work.

Today is my son's first day of kindergarten. I might be more nervous than he is. As a mother, I want to make sure my son feels safe and comfortable at all times. This morning I got up super early to talk to my son, Mike, about what he might expect from his first day at school. I also tell Mike what my expectations are for him.

Mike, today you will introduce yourself to your classmates. I expect you to pay attention to your teacher. If you misbehave there will be reasonable consequences put in place. Do not worry, I promise you will have fun!
On the way to school, I ask Mike how he feels about his first day of school. I listen when he tells me he is nervous, but I then ensure him everything will be okay. I explain to him it is normal for children his age to be nervous for their first day of school. Most importantly, I encourage him to be open minded and optimistic when we get to school.

Mom: You have to try it out first. Then we can have a discussion about school.
Mike: okay, I will. Thank you.
Mike: Mom I think I will not like school. Can I just stay home with you?
When we arrive to the school I make sure I introduce Mike and myself to his teacher. The teacher, Mrs.Adams, was very welcoming and she had a warm smile. After talking to the teacher, I bend down to talk to Mike at an eye to eye level. I tell him he will be safe here and that I will be back to come pick him up. The reason why many children worry about going to school is because it is their first time being away from their parents for a long period of time. Separation anxiety is why reassurance is key when dropping off my child at school.

Hello! welcome in!
Hello! My name is Shelly and this is my son Mike.
Today you will color a pictures and tell the class 3 facts about yourself.
Cool!
After I drop off Mike at school, I start doing my personal tasks. This way, when my child comes home from school I can dedicate my full attention to Mike. I also decided to write an email to Mrs.Adams to get some information on how Mike is performing in his class. This will let me know if there is anything else I can do to help Mike with this big step. This email will also provide some talking points for the teacher to use to interact better with Mike.
