Mrs. Web, I have a question. What is a food web?

That is a good question Emily.

Before we can understand what a food web is we have to know what a food chain is first. A food chain shows how different organisms eat each other. The food chain start with plants and ends with animals.

A food web is model the is made up of intersecting food chains.

There are four main parts to the food web. The first part is the Sun. The second part is Producers. The third part are the Consumers. The fourth part is the Decomposers.

The food web starts with the sun. The sunlight provides energy for the plants to grow, along with the help of water and carbon dioxide.

After the plants grow, they become the second main part of the food web called the Producers. The producers are plants that make their own food. They are also known as autotrophs.

The consumers, are organisms that eat plants, animals or both for energy. Their are three types of consumers; herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores.
