Gems are rocks that are worth money. When you find a gem, you can sell it and you can get a lot of money.

This gem is emerald. Emerald is a rare gem and can go for hundreds of dollars. An emerald is the May birthstone, and Emerald Miner himself owns one. This gem is a rock in the beryl family, the rarest of the family being red beryl.

These pics on the left are the birthstones of every month. Diamonds (which we will get to later in the book) are the April birthstone and are the rarest birthstone. Opals, however, can be rarer, in the form of a black opal, which is said to be hundreds of times rarer than diamond. Sapphire is another rare rock and it is a dark blue color like lapis lazuli. Topaz is my birthstone too!

Diamond is a rare gem that can come deep in a mine, and comes on rings for hundreds of dollars. Emerald Miner owns a shop called Diamond Bros. Inc., where you can buy the best diamond rings this side of the Great Diamond!

Diamond can come in many different colors. Colored diamonds (like the water-blue diamond here) are worth waaaaaaay more money than clear diamonds. On the right is a picture of all of the colors of diamond.
