Hi, I'm Phil Nye the Science Guy! Today we are learning about the Solar System!

Lets hop on this rocket and see the Solar System up close!

3,2,1 BLAST OFF!

Our first stop is the center of our Solar System, the Sun!

Phew, It's toasty over here at the center of the Solar System! This is the Sun! It's made up of 70% Hydrogen and 28% Helium! It is about 4.6 billion years old and is so large that you could fit 1 million copies of the planet Earth inside! Did you know that the Sun is an almost perfect sphere?

Next stop, Mercury! It is the closest to the sun, and also the smallest planet. It does not have any moons or rings, unlike several of the other planets. Did you know that 1 year on Mercury is the same as 88 days on Earth?

Here we are at Venus, the third planet from the Sun. It is the second brightest object in the night sky, only being outshone by the moon. It is sometimes called Earth's sister planet because it is very similar in size. Did you know that Venus rotates the opposite direction of all the other planets?

I bet this planet looks familiar! It's Earth, our home! It has been nicknamed the blue planet because it is made up of 70% water! Earth has only one moon, and it is visible at night, and sometimes during the day! Did you know that Earth is the only planet in the Solar System not named for a Greek or Roman deity?

We have arrived at the fourth planet from the Sun, Mars. Nicknamed the red planet, it has the largest dust storms of any planet in the Solar System. It was named after the Roman god of war and is the second smallest planet in the Solar System. Did you know that Mars has the tallest mountain in the Solar System?
