To Modern US history

To Start this all off. I'm Edward Dmytryk. I was born in Canada on September 4, 1908. My parents decided to move to California when I was younger.

When I was a little bit older I attended Hollywood High School. I really wanted to become a director for Hollywood movies. To just be involved in the movie industry.

When I was even older, I got many opportunities to edit movies. Eventually I directed movie, in the early 40's. In 1947 I directed a movie called a thriller. It was a big success. I had received an Oscar nomination for best director because of it.

Flashback to 1944. I was with a few of my associates. We were talking. And communism came up. What was communism? I had heard of it. But didn't know much about it. It was widely considered "bad" around the US. I decided to become a member of the communist party, as I had learned so much more about communism. Nine other directors had joined. And we had become known as the Hollywood 10.

I wasn't aware of it, but the HUAC (House Un-American Activites Commitee) was investigating the film industry because the US had heard there was communism taking place in the US.

Later on I was called to testify with nine other associates. Congress then cited us for contempt and I was supposed to go to prison along with the others. What was I gonna do now? Well the best option I had was to leave.

I decided to leave the US and go to Enlgand. I resumed my job as a director and made a few films. Eventually my passport ran up. Apparently I had to return to the US, in which I was arrested just as I got back.

I spent many days behind bars. Thinking to myself: Why did I join the communist party? The Communists had tricked me. I had to get out of there.
