FOR THE DUMMIES, <3

WHAT IS IMMUNITY ?

the ability of an organism to resist a particular infection or toxin by the action of specific antibodies or sensitized white blood cells.
what are the 2 types of immunity ?
Two types of immunity exist — active and passive:
- Active immunity occurs when our own immune system is responsible for protecting us from a pathogen.
- Passive immunity occurs when we are protected from a pathogen by immunity gained from someone else.
How does the body protect itself against foreign bodies? The immune system protects the body from possibly harmful substances by recognizing and responding to antigens. Antigens are substances (usually proteins) on the surface of cells, viruses, fungi, or bacteria. Your body's cells have proteins that are antigens. Your immune system learns to see these antigens as normal and usually does not react against them.
What happens in the 3 lines of defense?
the first line of defense – functions that own and manage risk. the second line of defense – functions that oversee or specialize in risk management, compliance. the third line of defense – functions that provide independent assurance, above all internal audit.
